Tamikrest
Desert blues, blazing with hope
Tamikrest are the voice of the Kel Tamasheq people, fusing the hypnotic grooves of desert blues with rock ambition and global influences. Formed in 2007 in Kidal, Mali, and now scattered across Algeria, France, and beyond, the band transforms exile into anthems of resistance and hope. Their fifth album Tamotaït (2020) — meaning “hope for a positive change” — is their most expansive yet, featuring collaborations with Moroccan singer Hindi Zahra and Japanese traditional musicians. Produced by David Odlum, the record blends the meditative power of Tamasheq music with the energy of rock’n’roll, from defiant anthems like “Amzagh” to the cross-cultural beauty of “Tabsit.” Tamikrest’s music is both a weapon of hope and a vessel of truth.
